Adding and editing monitors

A monitor is one web address that Mage Watcher checks. Create a group first; if you have none, Add monitor takes you to the group form.

Click Add monitor on the Monitors page or a group page and fill in:

  • Group. The application or customer the monitor belongs to.
  • Name and URL. Both required.
  • Type. HTTP or HTTPS.
  • Method. GET, HEAD or POST.
  • Check interval (seconds). 60, 300, 600, 900, 1800 or 3600. The default is 300, every five minutes. Every interval is available on every plan.
  • Timeout (seconds). 1 to 60, default 10. A site that has not answered by then counts as failed.
  • Performance threshold (ms). Optional. When a successful check takes longer than this, the monitor shows as Degraded.
  • Expected content. Optional text that must appear in the page. If it is missing, the check fails even when the site answers.
  • Follow redirects. On by default. Mage Watcher follows up to 10 redirects to reach the final page; more than 10 counts as a failed check. With it off, a redirect answer (such as 301 or 302) counts as a failed check.
  • Monitor SSL certificate. On by default. Records the days left on the certificate and sends expiry warnings.
  • Enabled. Untick to create the monitor paused.
  • Check regions. Tick at least one of the monitoring regions available to you. More regions give faster and more reliable verification when something fails.
  • Web image capture. See Web images.

Click Create monitor. You land on the new monitor's page, and the first checks arrive within the check interval.

A check counts as successful only when the site answers 200 OK. A site that answers with any other status, including a redirect it was not allowed to follow, counts as failed.

The Monitors list

Monitors lists every monitor across your groups in a table: Monitor and its address, Group and its type, Status, Last check, SSL days, and on wide screens Interval and Regions. The Group dropdown narrows the list to one group. Each row has the same four action buttons as the dashboard.

Pausing, editing and deleting

  • Pause checks stops the monitor being checked until you click Start checks. You are asked to confirm before pausing.
  • Edit opens the same form with your settings. Click Save changes.
  • Delete monitor, on the edit page or as an action button, permanently removes the monitor and its check history after you confirm.
