Notification rules
A rule says which event to send, to which channel, for which monitors.
The rule list shows each rule's event, its channel, which monitors it covers, any wait, whether it also sends the back-up email, its reminder interval, and disabled or channel disabled where they apply. With no rules at all, the list warns that nobody is emailed when a site goes down.
Adding a rule. Click Add rule and fill in:
- When. The event:
- Site down (outage confirmed)
- Site back up (outage resolved)
- SSL certificate expiring
- Email. The channel to send to. If you have none, add a channel first.
- For. All monitors, A single group or A single monitor, then choose which.
- Wait before sending (seconds). 0 to 3600. If the site recovers before the wait is over, no email is sent for that outage.
- Also email when the site is back up. Site down rules only, on by default. This saves you a separate back-up rule.
- Remind me while it is still down. Site down rules only: No reminders, or every 15 minutes, 30 minutes, hour, 2 hours or 4 hours. At most 24 reminders are sent per outage.
- Enabled.
Click Create rule, or Save changes when editing. Delete rule on a rule's edit page removes it after you confirm.
One email per channel. When several rules send the same event to the same channel, for example an all-monitors rule and a rule for one monitor, the channel still receives a single email. If their waits differ, the shortest wait is used.
SSL certificate warnings are sent when a certificate has 30, 14, 7, 3 and 1 days left. Only the most urgent warning is sent: a certificate first seen with 2 days left gets the 3-day warning, not five at once. A renewed certificate starts afresh. Certificates are checked hourly.
What the emails contain.
| Contents | |
|---|---|
| Outage confirmed | Group, monitor, address, when it was detected and confirmed (UTC), the confirming regions, the first failure and the incident ID |
| Still down | Group, monitor, address, down since, how long, incident ID |
| Recovered | Group, monitor, address, when it started and recovered, total duration, incident ID |
| SSL certificate expiring soon | Group, monitor, address and days remaining |
Older rules. A rule made for an event Mage Watcher does not send shows a warning that it never fires. Edit it to choose one of the events above, or delete it.
