When publishing fails

If a platform refuses a post, its variant is marked Failed with the reason, and everyone who can publish, plus the post's author, is notified. The dashboard shows Publishing needs attention with links to failed and partly published posts.

What you can do

  • Fix and retry. Edit the variant's text if needed, then click Retry.
  • Abandon. Stop trying to publish that platform. It counts as done and its failure stays on record. Undo abandon reverses it.
  • Cancel the platform so it will not be published.
  • Reconnect the account under Brand → Publishing if the failure is about the connection, then retry.

A post where every platform was abandoned or cancelled, and none posted, becomes Abandoned.

Common reasons

Reason What it means
Account not connected The variant has no connected account to post to
Authentication failure The account's sign-in has expired or been revoked; reconnect it
Permission failure The account is not allowed to post to that Page or profile
Invalid content The platform refused the content, for example too long, or no image for Instagram
Media failure An image or video could not be used, for example too small or the wrong format
Rate limited The platform asked Mage Engage to slow down; try again later
Provider outage The platform was having problems; try again later
Not supported yet The post has something the platform cannot take from Mage Engage yet, such as a video
Mage X Post Tokens needed Not enough Mage X Post Tokens to post to X, or the account's daily X limit was reached
Being checked with the platform X did not answer clearly whether it published the post. Mage Engage checks with X and updates the post within a few minutes; it is not sent again meanwhile
Platform credits used up Posting to X is paused on Mage Engage's side; Press Mage has been told. Try again later
Never sent The post was queued but never went out; retry it
Unknown error Something else went wrong; the message underneath gives the detail

The failed card shows Publishing failed: followed by the reason, with the platform's own message underneath.

If a post's links could not be shortened by Mage URL, it goes out with its original links and the variant says so.
